We have decided to raise money for Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Translational Research Program in memory of Carolina. As you may know, Carolina received treatment which extended her life at MGH. Through the dedication and commitment to using cutting edge drugs, we were given more time with her. We began in a clinical trial with Dr. Eunice Kwak. Within a month of treatment, we realized Carolina's cancer was advancing rapidly beyond its initial diagnosis. She was rapidly declining and clinical decisions were made which saved her life. These drugs attacked and reduced her cancer. Dr. Kwak and the entire MGH team truly gave us the gift of life, albeit for a short amount of time. They were compassionate, caring and encouraging. The research at MGH Cancer Center directly benefited Carolina and has helped many other families get more time together. Ultimately, these drugs will cure someone and change the way gastric cancer and other cancers are dealt with. Dr. Kwak and her team of researchers need our help. In memory of Carolina, wife, mother, sister and friend, please help us help others.

GASTROINTESTINAL TRANSLATIONAL RESEARCH PROGRAM AT THE MASS GENERAL CANCER CENTER
General Overview
The Translational Research Program in the Tucker Gosnell Center for Gastrointestinal Cancers seeks to efficiently integrate cutting-edge laboratory and clinical research efforts to expedite transformative advances in our ability to deliver personalized cancer medicine approaches to our patients. Led by Ryan Corcoran, MD, PhD and Theodore Hong, MD, the program focuses on developing new and effective therapies for gastrointestinal cancers.
Over the past decade, targeted therapies – drugs targeting specific gene mutations and pathways that are responsible for the survival of a cancer – have revolutionized the treatment of cancer. We have seen incredible responses and lives extended in patients where standard treatments had failed. However, in many patients, these responses are temporary, as the cancer acquires resistance to the therapy by finding a new pathway to exploit. The goal of the Translational Research group is to develop promising therapeutic strategies that can be evaluated in clinical trials for patients whose cancers are driven by specific mutations.
In addition, Drs. Corcoran and Hong are looking at circulating tumor DNA – DNA fragments shed into the bloodstream from tumor cells throughout the body – to help guide treatment and monitor response to targeted therapies, and to track and study the evolution of drug resistance in patients in real-time.
The Game, Set, Laugh Tennis Tournament was held March 12, 2016 at Fore Court Racquet Club in Cumberland, RI. The tournament was incredibly successful, raising over $16,000 for the MGH Cancer Center Fund in memory of Carolina Haggarty. Thanks to all who attended and donated especially Fore Court and the Morin Family and 47 Brand.
